What is Defend?
Defend is a topical insecticide for dogs.
Active ingredient: Permethrin (65% w/w). Permethrin is a Type I pyrethroid insecticide and repellant. Permethrin is in the class of pyrethroids: synthetic pyrethrins. Synthetic pyrethrins are laboratory-generated, not plant-based. Permethrins are more long lasting than plant-based pyrethrins, their natural counterparts. This compound is not an organophosphate.
Mechanism of Action: Pyrethroids act as nervous system agents for insects, causing repeated over firing of nerves, accomplished through manipulation of the flow of sodium compounds out of cells. Pyrethroids are oil-soluble. They distribute themselves through the oils in an animal’s skin, and will diffuse across the animal’s entire body.
Indications: Topical application for dogs only. Chemical agent is active to repel and kill ticks, fleas, and lice. Also reduces incidence of mosquito bites on dogs. Has a wide margin of safety. Appropriate for all breeds of dogs.
