What is Cosequin?

What is Cosequin? Cosequin and Cosequin DS are over-the-counter nutritional supplements for dogs that are used to maintain healthy joints. Both supplements contain glucosamine and chondroitin, which have been proven to provide numerous benefits in terms of joint health. Each regular strength Cosequin capsule contains 250mg of glucosamine, 200mg or sodium chondroitin sulfate, and 2mg Manganese (as ascorbate). Each Cosequin DS capsule and tablet contains 500mg of glucosamine, 400mg or sodium chondroitin sulfate, and 5mg Manganese (as ascorbate). Cosequin is the only over-the-counter joint health supplement for dogs that has been proven safe though various veterinary studies, and it is the most commonly recommended brand by veterinarians. The medication is available in regular and double strength capsules as well as regular and double strength chewable tablets. What is Cosequin used for? Cosequin and Cosequin DS are used to help dogs maintain healthy joints as they grow older. Maintaining joint health helps to reduce the occurrence of pain while helping to maintain the dog's mobility. How does Cosequin work? One of the primary active ingredients in Cosequin is glucosamine, which occurs naturally in healthy cartilage in pets and people. It is an important compound because it increases the production of the molecules that hold water within the cartilage, thereby keeping it hydrated. When the cartilage remains healthy, it helps to cushion the joints during physical activity. As pets age, however, the cartilage begins to break down. Though further study is needed, early indications have shown that supplements containing glucosamine can help the body continue to create the molecules that keep cartilage moist. Glucosamine is often paired with sodium chondroitin sulfate, which is another naturally occurring component of cartilage. In the body, chondroitin improves the structure of cartilage and makes it resistant to compression.

How to use Cosequin

Cosequin comes in three different forms. These forms are Cosequin capsules, Cosequin DS capsules, and Cosequin DS chewable tablets. The capsules may be given whole, or they may be broken open and sprinkled over food. All Cosequin medications should be given in a higher dosage for the first 4 to 6 weeks, or until you begin to notice results in your dog. The following information is a guideline of how much of each supplement should be given to dogs of various sizes. The typical starting dosage for Cosequin Capsules for dogs weighing less than 10 pounds is 1/2 to 1 capsule per day. This dosage should be given for 4 to 6 weeks. After the first 6 weeks, the dosage should be reduced to 1/2 to 1 capsule every other day. Dogs weighing 10 to 24 pounds require 1 capsule in the morning and 1 in the evening for the first 6 weeks, and 1 capsule per day thereafter. Larger dogs should not be given regular Cosequin capsules. Cosequin DS Capsules dosages are as follows. Dogs weighing 10 to 24 pounds require 1 capsule daily for the first 6 weeks, and 1 capsule every other day during the following weeks. 25 to 49 pound dogs should be given 1 capsule and in the morning and 1 capsule in the evening for 6 weeks, then the dosage can be reduced to to capsule per day. Dogs weighing 50 to 100 pounds should be given 2 capsules in the morning and 1 in the evening. After the first 6 weeks, the dog only needs 1 or 2 capsules daily. For dogs weighing over 100 pounds, the recommended starting dosage is 2 capsules in the morning and 2 in the evening. After the first 6 weeks, the dog should be given 1 in the morning and one in the evening. For the first 6 weeks, dogs weighing less than 10 pounds should be given 1/2 tablet of Cosequin Chewable Tablets. After the initial 6 weeks, reduce the dose to 1/2 tablet every other day. Dogs weighing 10 to 24 pounds should be given 1 tablet per day during the first 6 weeks, and 1/2 tablet every day thereafter. Typically dogs weighing 25 to 49 pounds

Cosequin warnings and precautions

Cosequin and Cosequin DS should not be used as a replacement for surgery or other necessary treatment, especially if there is an infection present. In humans, glucosamine increases insulin resistance in some people. As a result, dogs with diabetes and those that are overweight and have problems regulating their glucose should be closely monitored when taking any supplement containing glucosamine. Before starting your dog on any type of treatment, speak with your veterinarian.

What do I do if I have missed a Cosequin dose?

If a dose is missed, it should be given to the dog as soon as possible. Overdose is highly unlikely, and studies have shown that the only problem that may occur as a result is diarrhea.

Cosequin interactions

Studies have not shown that Cosequin or Cosequin DS cause any drug interactions, but glucosamine may increase insulin resistance.

Cosequin side effects

Cosequin and Cosequin DS have a very low occurrence of side effects. The most common side effect is gastrointestinal upset, such as diarrhea. If your dog experiences such side effects, they can usually be corrected by giving the supplement with a meal.
