Cortifoam (Hydrocortisone Acetate)

Cortifoam
(also known as Colifoam Rectal Foam)
Cortifoam
(also known as Colifoam Rectal Foam)
Cortifoam
(also known as Colifoam Rectal Foam)

What is Cortifoam?

Cortifoam (hydrocortisone) is a corticosteroid which decreases inflammation in the body.

What is Cortifoam used for?

Cortifoam is used to treat hemorrhoid and relieve pain, diarrhea, bloody stools, and other inflammatory symptoms associated with a condition known as ulcerative colitis of the rectum, also called ulcerative proctitis. It should be kept in mind that this medication does not treat ulcerative proctitis but only provides relief from its symptoms.

How does Cortifoam work?

Hydrocortisone, the main component of Cortifoam, is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory actions. It inhibits the actions of chemicals which cause inflammation in the body.

How to use Cortifoam

Cortifoam should be used in the manner prescribed by a doctor. Using the medication for longer time or in larger amount than prescribed may prove to be harmful. The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to treatment. Read instructions given along with product package carefully.

Empty your bowel and bladder before using this medication.

Shake the container and prime it before using the foam. You should never insert the container directly into anus, but should use the applicator provided. Fill the applicator and gently insert its tip into anus and then press the plunge to release the foam. Do not push the applicator past the anus into your rectum. After use, clean the applicator thoroughly with warm water. Also rinse the cap and tip of the aerosol container to prevent blockage. Wash your hands properly afterwards.

Do not increase or decrease your dose without consultation with your doctor. However, if your condition does not improve at all or becomes worse consult your doctor immediately.

Cortifoam warnings and precautions

Cortifoam is not administered to patients who are allergic to hydrocortisone.

Before using Cortifoam,  inform your doctor about your medical conditions, especially if you have recently undergone an intestinal surgery, or if you have any of the following conditions: a parasitic, bacterial, fungal or viral infection (chicken pox, TB, shingles, herpes infection of the eye, measles etc.), stomach or intestinal problems (ulcer, perforation, fistula, colostomy, blockage, inflammation), kidney problems, myasthenia gravis, high blood pressure or a history of congestive heart failure.

Steroids can increase glucose levels in urine or blood. So if you have diabetes you should talk to your doctor before using Cortifoam.

Steroids can also block actions of a vaccine. So, avoid getting a vaccine while using Cortifoam.

Do not apply the foam if the affected skin has an infection or cuts, scrapes, open wounds or reduced blood circulation. The foam is for anal use only. Avoid contact of Cortifoam with face, near eyes, nose, or mouth.

Effects of Cortifoam on a fetus or a nursing baby are not known for certain. Hence, pregnant and lactating women are advised to discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medication with their doctors.

What do I do if I have missed a Cortifoam dose?

If you have missed a Cortifoam dose, use it as soon as you remember. If, however, it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose can be skipped. Do not use a double dose.

What do I do if I have taken a Cortifoam overdose?

If you have used an overdose of Cortifoam, consult your doctor.
