What is Casodex?

Casodex (bicalutamide) is a non-steroidal anti-androgen. Its chemical name is propanamide, N-[4-cyano-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-3-[(4-fluorophenyl)sulfonyl]-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-,(+-).

What is Casodex used for?

Casodex is indicated for the treatment of prostate cancer that has spread to other areas of the body. It is used in combination with LHRH or luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone. The medication prevents testicles from producing testosterone.

How does Casodex work?

Casodex works by blocking the action of androgens or male hormones in the prostrate and thereby slowing down the growth of tumor.

How to use Casodex

Casodex should be taken in the manner prescribed by the doctor. Taking it for longer periods or in larger amounts than recommended can cause health problems. Do not start taking the medicine if you have not received LHRH injection. The injection is given at intervals of 4 weeks.

The drug is usually taken once daily, either in the morning or evening. It can be taken with or without food. Remember to take the medicine at the same time each day.

Get your prostate and liver functions checked on a regular basis while using Casodex. Follow your doctor’s instructions wisely. Adhere to the diet and exercise schedule provided to you by your doctor.

Casodex warnings and precautions

Before using Casodex, tell your doctor if you are allergic to bicalutamide. Casodex should not be used by women or children. The drug should not be taken by a person who has not received LHRH injection.

Prior to taking Casodex, tell your doctor if you have diabetes, liver disease, or any other serious illness. The drug should never be taken by women or children. They should not be allowed to even handle the drug.

Pregnant women should not use or be exposed to the drug as it can cause birth defects in an unborn baby.

What do I do if I have missed a Casodex dose?

If you have missed your Casodex dose, you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember but do not take it if it is time for your next dose. However, if you have missed your appointment for LHRH injection, you should contact your doctor for instructions.

What do I do if I have taken a Casodex overdose?

An overdose of Casodex does not produce serious consequences. However, if you have taken a Casodex overdose, you should seek medical attention.

Casodex interactions

Before taking Casodex, consult your doctor if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin). Tell your doctor about all prescription and non prescription drugs that you use including mineral and vitamin supplements that you may be using. Also, do not start taking any new medicine without consulting your doctor.
