Cardura is a prescription drug which belongs to the group of medications called alpha-adrenergic blockers.
What is Cardura used for?
Cardura is used for the treatment of hypertension. It also helps in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia in men, a state in which there is enlargement of the prostate gland.
How does Cardura work?
Cardura makes the blood vessels to relax and expand, hence improving the flow of blood. It also helps in the relaxation of the prostate and bladder’s neck muscles which makes urination easier.
How to use Cardura
Avoid taking Cardura in larger amounts and follow your doctor’s instructions. In case of any doubt, refer to the prescription label enclosed within.
Cardura must be taken with a glass of water. Initially when you start taking the drug you might feel dizzy, so it is advisable to take it during bedtime for a first few days.
Be very cautious when waking up after the dosage. For best results, take the medicine regularly, if possible, at the same time.
Cardura warnings and precautions
Cardura might cause dizziness and this may increase with the intake of alcohol. So, try and avoid alcohol during the course.
After the first dose you might witness a sudden plunge in blood pressure. To avoid lightheadedness or fainting, stand up and lie down slowly. Before going for a dental treatment or commencing with any other treatment, check with your doctor first.
There is a little chance that one may face prolonged or painful penis erection. If it happens by chance take immediate step and inform your doctor as it may cause permanent impotency.
Make sure you do not miss any lab tests recommended by doctors as these tests are to check the rate of side effects.
Take special care in case of elders, as they may be extra sensitive. Pregnant or lactating women are advised to discuss the risks involved, with their doctors.
What do I do if I have missed a Cardura dose?
If you have missed your Cardura dose you should take it immediately. Avoid taking two doses at a time. If it’s time for the next dose, the simply take the next scheduled dose.

If you have taken a Cardura overdose you should contact your doctor immediately.
Cardura interactions
Your doctor must be aware of all the other prescribed or non prescribed medicines that you take. So ensure that he knows everything because if he doesn’t, you are likely to face trouble as there are some drugs that can interact with Cardura.
Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors react with Cardura and cause extreme lowering of the blood pressure.
Voriconazole, Clarithromycin, ketoconazole, HIV protease inhibitors, Nefazodone and Telithromycin are also said to enhance the risk of the side effects of Cardura.
Cardura side effects
While it is said that almost all drugs may cause side effects there are some who may just result in minor ones.
You, however, must consult your doctor if these side effects persist or cause some serious trouble. Minor or very common side effects related to Cardura are lightheadedness, weakness, nasal congestion, dizziness, or drowsiness.
Immediate medical aid is advised in case of severe or major Cardura side effects. These include prolonged or painful erection, vision changes, severe allergic reactions, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, swelling of ankles, feet, or hands; chest pain, headache, shortness of breath, etc.
