What is Cardene SR?
Cardene SR (nicardipine) is an oral drug which belongs to the class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers.
What is Cardene SR used for?
Cardene SR is used in combination with other medications to treat hypertension and chest pain. Treating hypertension reduces the risks of heart attack, stroke and kidney diseases.
How does Cardene SR work?
Nicardipine, the main component of Cardene SR, is a calcium entry blocker. It does not change calcium concentration in serum but prevents transmembrane influx of calcium ions into smooth muscles and cardiac muscles, though its effects are more selective to vascular muscles than cardiac muscles.
How to use Cardene SR
Cardene SR should be used in the manner prescribed by a doctor. Taking the drug in larger amount than prescribed may prove to be harmful. The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to treatment.
Cardene SR is usually taken orally twice a day, with or without food. The extended-release capsules should be swallowed whole and not opened, crushed or chewed.
The drug should be taken regularly to get maximum benefits. Avoid eating or drinking any form of grapefruit as grapefruit interacts with Cardene SR and may cause serious consequences.
You should keep taking this drug even if you feel better after a few days. Do not stop your dose unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Stopping the dose suddenly may cause withdrawal symptoms. The dose needs to be gradually decreased as per directions from your doctor. However, if your condition does not improve at all or becomes worse consult your doctor immediately.
Cardene SR warnings and precautions
Cardene SR is not administered to patients who are allergic to nicardipine.
Before taking the medication, inform your doctor about your medical conditions, especially if you have any of the following medical conditions: kidney or liver disease, heart or blood vessel disorders such as sick sinus syndrome, heart failure, coronary artery disease, aortic stenosis, or low blood pressure. In such cases there may be a dose adjustment.
Older patients, especially those over 65 years of age are more susceptible to the side effects of Cardene SR. Hence the drug should be administered with caution in such patients.
Cardene SR may cause dizziness and hence it is advisable to avoid activities which require complete alertness or clear vision during this period. Also avoid consumption of alcohol as alcohol may increase such side effects.
Effects of Cardene SR on fetus are not known for certain. But it is believed to pass through breast milk and may affect a nursing baby. Therefore, pregnant and lactating women are advised to discuss the possible risks and benefits of taking the drug with their doctors.
What do I do if I have missed a Cardene SR dose?
If you have missed a Cardene SR dose, take it as soon as you remember. If, however, it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose can be skipped. Do not take a double dose.
