What is Azelex?
Azelex belongs to a family of drugs called dicarboxylic acids.
What is Azelex used for?
Azelex is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate acne.
How does Azelex work?
Azelex works by stooping the growth of bacteria that causes acne on the skin and by keeping the pores open and unblocked, thereby, decreasing the number of acne pimples.
How to use Azelex
Azelex should be used in a manner prescribed by the doctor. Using it for longer period or in larger amount than recommended can cause skin problems.
Before applying the medicine, wash and dry your hands and the affected area. Apply a thin layer of the medicine to the affected area and rub in gently. The medicine is to be used twice daily, in the morning and evening. Do not cover it with bandage unless advised by the doctor. Wash your hands properly after use.
Avoid getting the medicine in your eyes, however if it does, splash water.
Azelex warnings and precautions
Do not use Azelex if you are allergic to the medicine.
Prior to using Azelex, let your doctor know if you have asthma, repeated episodes of cold sores or fever blisters (oral herpes).
Do not use Azelex if you are pregnant or lactating, unless clearly asked by a registered medical practitioner to do so.
What do I do if I have missed a Azelex dose?
If you have missed a Azelex dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next application, skip the missed dose and continue the routine.
What do I do if I have taken a Azelex overdose?
If you have used an overdose of Azelex or if you have applied too much medicine, you should consult your doctor right away.
Azelex interactions
Before using Azelex, tell your doctor about all prescribed drugs used by you including vitamin supplements and herbal medicines. Some drugs are known to interact with Azelex when used in tandem with it.
Also, do not start taking or using any new medicine without consulting your physician.
Azelex side effects
Side effects from Azelex include worsening of cold sores or fever blisters, unusual and unwanted hair growth, changes in skin color, worsening of asthma symptoms such as wheezing or shortness of breath, skin rash, itching, swelling or in rare cases, lightening of skin color (hypopigmentation). If you experience any such side effects after using Azelex, contact your doctor right away.
