Plavix vs Coumadin

What is the difference between Plavix vs Coumadin? Both prevent blood clots from forming, which can prevent stroke or heart attack, but that is the only similarity between these two drugs. While both drugs can accomplish the same end, each one has different means to accomplish this end. And these means determine which medication your doctor will prescribe for your condition.

Plavix (Clopidogrel) is an antiplatelet medication, which means it prevents blood clots by decreasing platelets from sticking together. Asprin has the same antiplatelet properties. Plavix is prescribed for people with heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, coronary artery disease, and other similar conditions to prevent heart attack and stroke.

Coumadin (Warfarin) is an anticoagulant medication, which means it prevents blood clots by stopping the blood from clotting. Coumadin is prescribed for people with atrial fibrillation, pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs), artificial heart valves, and other similar conditions to prevent heart attack and stroke.

What is the biggest difference between Plavix vs Coumadin? Besides being completely different classifications of medicines (one is an antiplatelet while the other is an anticoagulant), they both treat different diseases or conditions, even though all these conditions could lead to a heart attack or stroke. For instance, both atrial fibrillation and coronary artery disease could lead to a stroke, but each condition is treated with different medication. Plavix cannot prevent a stroke in atrial fibrillation patients because the medication works differently than Coumadin. Since both medications work differently to prevent stoke or heart attack, they are used to treat different medical conditions.

What is the difference between Antiplatelets vs Anticoagulants (Plavix vs Coumadin)? Anticoagulants prevent blood from clotting and can prevent existing clots from getting any bigger. Antiplatelets can prevent blood cots from forming. While they both sound similar, they work in the blood differently. Platelets stick together to form a blood clot when you get a cut. Sometimes, these platelets stick together inside the body causing a blood clot. Antiplatelets prevent these platelets from sticking together excessively. Coagulation occurs after an injury. Platelets begin sticking together causing a plug, while coagulation factors (proteins) form fibrin strands that strengthen the platelet plug. Both work together to clot blood, but each one serves a different purpose. Anticoagulants prevent coagulation.

Plavix and Coumadin are two completely different medications that can prevent stroke or heart attack. Each one works differently to prevent blood clots, and each one is used to treat different conditions. Only your doctor will know which one best suite your medical needs.
