Retin-A is a topical acne medication cream used to treat whiteheads and blackheads. It is a derivative of Vitamin A and works by promoting and increasing cell turnover within the skin. This turnover produces an excretion of the plugged oil and bacteria within the follicles resulting in less acne. In addition, Retin-A is effective in reducing lines, wrinkles and brown spots. Retin-A is the only topical cream which has been proven to decrease wrinkles. Although effective, Retin-A does take time to work.
Noticeable Retin-A results are normally seen within 6-12 weeks. This variation depends on one's skin type, the severity of acne, and the body's response to the medication. One may experience flaking, redness or dryness which often causes people to discontinue use of the medication. Often times, acne may become worse for a period of a couple weeks before any improvement takes place. However, the dryness, pain and irritation will normally decrease once the skin becomes accustomed to the medication and new cells turn over.
In order for Retin-A results to be seen it is crucial to continue the medication on a regular basis. To be most effective, Retin-A should be used at the same time everyday and one should not use any more or less than the amount the doctor has prescribed. Using the medication inconsistently or using too much or too little will cause improvement to occur at a slower rate. However, if the directions are followed properly and use is continued for one to three months one will see an improvment. Furthermore, in some cases, Retin-A results are not see for 6 months.
On the other hand, Retin-A results are not usually seen for lines and wrinkles for about 6 months. One may experience the same side effects of those with acne. However, improvement does take longer and one needs to be patient. For best results, Retin-A should be used for at least a year.
Retin-A can be a very effective acne and wrinkle medication when used properly and one will usually see results for acne within 6-12 weeks and within 6 months for wrinkles, brown spots, and lines. Although one may experience negative side effects for 1-2 weeks, continued use will usually result in improved and clearer skin within a few months. The key to favorable Retin-A results is patience, understanding the way the medication works, and proper use.
