Crestor vs Lipitor

There are many drugs on the market for the treatment of high cholesterol. Some may wonder what the benefits and risks are for some of them. Regarding Crestor vs Lipitor, there is much information to be considered. These two drugs are similar in many ways but also have some significant differences that need to be taken into account when deciding which one to take.

Both Crestor and Lipitor are statins, drugs which block the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme controls the rate of the body's cholesterol production. By blocking it, Crestor and Lipitor effectively reduce the liver's production of cholesterol. Both medications appear to do good jobs of this reduction as well.

Crestor and Lipitor both can cause side effects when taken. The most common side effects are aches and pains, usually headaches and stomach aches. Sometimes there can be lower back pain and even sore eyes and cheekbones. Less common side pains are joint pain or neuropathy.

Mild to moderate gastrointestinal discomfort is another side effect for both Crestor and Lipitor. For most people, these side effects become more manageable or subside as their bodies become more accustomed to the medication over a period of time. The most common problems include gas and bloating with some occasional nausea, diarrhea, constipation and indigestion.

Cold or flu-like symptoms are also common side effects for both drugs, along with fatigue and loss of appetite. Sometimes Crestor patients will develop a dry cough and swollen neck glands. These symptoms are less common with Lipitor users. Patients of both drugs cite instances of runny noses, swollen sinuses and hoarseness.

Patients of both drugs also reported skin related side effects on occasions. Other rare effects include irritability and agitation with Crestor patients, while Lipitor patients complained of recurring nightmares and paranoia. These conditions are extremely rare, but if experienced, follow-up by a mental health care professional is advised.

Caution should be exercised when considering taking any medication, including these two drugs. The most important thing to consider when comparing Crestor and Lipitor is that patients will react differently to them. While Lipitor is still prescribed more often, Crestor is just as valid an option in treating high cholesterol. The risks must be weighed against the benefits in either case. As the medical community continues to fight cholesterol problems, ultimately the patient, under physician guidance, must decide between the two as to what is best individually.
