a-1 Selective Alpha Blockers

The a1-selective alpha blocker class of medicines is used to relax certain muscles and assist small blood vessels in remaining open if they're prone to closing or need a more consistent flow. This class of drugs, also known as alpha-adrenergic blocking agents, work by preventing norepinephrine from tightening the muscles in the walls of the veins and small arteries. When those muscles are prevented from tightening, blood flow and blood pressure are improved, which provides a number of significant health benefits.

However, a1-selective alpha blocker drugs don't only ease blood flow. They also relax other muscles throughout the body, which can help improve the flow of urine, ease tension, and reduce pain from muscle cramps. This is why this class of drugs is prescribed for a wide variety of conditions. Many different alpha-adrenergic blocking agents are available for prescription today, including both long and short-acting ones. The short-acting drugs get to work speedily, but their effects wear off within a few hours. The long-acting versions don't kick in right away, so you have to be patient with them. However, once they do start working, their effects tend to last for a while. Your doctor will prescribe the type that he feels is best for your particular constitution and condition.

Some examples of this type of drug include:
*Tamsulosin (brand name Flomax)
*Alfuzosin (brand name Uroxatral)
*Prazosin (brand name Minipress)
*Doxazosin (brand name Cardura)
*Terazosin (brand name Hytrin)
*Silodosin (brand name Rapaflo)

If you have a condition such as high blood pressure, enlarged prostate, adrenal gland problems, circulatory problems, scleroderma, or other condition that results in a need for decreased muscle contractions, this class of drugs may be prescribed for you. Their most typical use is in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Some alpha blockers are also used in the treatment of high blood pressure, and are often used as the first treatment option for that condition in combination with other drugs, such as diuretics. Alpha-adrenergic blocking agents are rarely used alone as a first option for high blood pressure unless it's mild and relatively easily controlled.

If you're taking this class of drugs, you should be aware of some potential side effects and contraindications. These drugs can cause significant low blood pressure and dizziness when you first start taking them, which can cause temporary fainting when you stand up suddenly from a sitting or lying position. In order to counteract this potential side effect, always rise slowly. You may also experience weight gain, small reductions in LDL cholesterol (the bad kind), nausea, headache, pounding heartbeat, and weakness at any point during your treatment with this class of drugs. .

Finally, you'll want to let your doctor know if you're taking any other medications while on this class of drugs. Beta blockers, erectile dysfunction drugs, calcium channel blockers, and more can interact badly with a-1 selective alpha blocker drugs. Some studies have also indicated that they can also increase the risk of heart failure if you use them for prolonged periods of time. However, depending on your condition, your doctor may decide that the benefits outweigh the risks, and that taking this class of drugs would be beneficial to your overall long-term health.
